What Is Pilates?

Pilates is a system of body conditioning exercises developed at the beginning of the 20th by Joseph Pilates who called his method “Contrology”. Joseph Pilates believed a man to be as young as his vertebral column. “If your spine is stiff at 30, you are old. If it is flexible at 60, you are young.”

Over and over again throughout his teaching, Pilates refers to the use of the breath, focus of the mind, and precise alignment of the body and its movement. Pilates said, “Change happens through movement and movement heals.”

Studio Pilates

Pilates developed his “apparatus” to enhance the mat work sequence of exercises and also as a rehabilitation tool for wounded World War I soldiers. Many of these first rehab patients would have been amputees. In the 20th century, his exercises were adopted and adapted by physiotherapists. Today, I teach Pilates to clients of all ages and abilities.

Whether you want to enhance your sporting ability, improve your posture, or use it as a rehab tool, I would love to help you reach your goal with your bespoke programme.

“You will feel better in 10 sessions, look better in 20 sessions, and have a completely new body in 30 sessions.”

What Is Meant by “Functional Pilates”?

Functional Pilates looks at the body as a whole and addresses imbalances by observing where there may be weakness or an area overworking as a compensatory technique due to pain. “Referred pain” is often due to movements that have been developed to avoid a painful movement in another area. Your Pilates session with Body In Balance Pilates will address these issues.
